DES MOINES — The Ottumwa Bulldogs are really hitting the ball.

The Bulldogs blasted out 28 hits in nine innings of play Monday and outscored Des Moines North 32-2 in a CIML Metro sweep of the Polar Bears. The Bulldogs won the first game 16-0 in four innings and took a 16-2 five-inning win in the nightcap.

The sweep comes on the heels of a 17-2 non-conference victory over Mount Pleasant last week. All told, Ottumwa has outscored its opponents 49-4 over its last three games.

“Offensively, some guys hit the ball really well,” said Ottumwa coach Ryan Woods. “We had a lot of guys break out. If we can keep getting good hitting like that, and we get some good pitching, we can win a few more before we’re done.”

Junior Chris Cordray carried the big bat for the Bulldogs in the first game. His grad slam home run in the third inning turned what was already a blowout into a laugher in favor of Ottumwa. Cordray finished game one with the homer, a triple and five runs batted in. Daniel Goodvin and Brian Delker also each added two RBI, while Ben Lott and Weston Mitchell had doubles in support of Delker, who allowed two hits over four innings of shutout work.

Colton Millard took the win on the mound in the nightcap for Ottumwa, as the Bulldogs piled up 13 runs in the second inning to put the contest out of reach. Delker had a double and a triple for Ottumwa, while Ben Lott and P.J. Shaeffer each doubled and Justin Birch had four RBI.

The Bulldogs are now 11-15 on the season and the two wins even Ottumwa’s CIML record at 8-8. Ottumwa returns home for a JV/V contest against Washington today. On Wednesday, Ottumwa will host Des Moines Roosevelt in a doubleheader that was postponed last week. Ottumwa then hosts Des Moines Hoover in a twinbill on Wednesday.
