Postal system not serving small towns

I have grown up “small town”-raised. My family moved from Delta but returned this year. I like the idea of knowing who my neighbors are and walking down the road and seeing a friendly smile from someone who knows my name. The only problem with small towns? The United States postal system is trying to wipe them off the map.

On Aug. 5, I received a letter stating that on Aug. 30 our post office would be closed and we would have to go to Sigourney to do packages and such. There are people in this community that have no transportation, and there are the elderly who are not able to get to a Sigourney post office. Our town has signed petitions, we have held special meetings and we have a meeting with the postal service Thursday night on the reasons we are closing.

The good thing about a small town is when there are things that need done, we all get together and get them done. As a community we have come together and have wonderful individuals who have looked into the matter and gotten results from congressmen and retired post masters. There is a lady at the senator’s office who handles cases of small town post offices being closed.

No matter what our differences are, we have come together for what matters most, and I encourage all small towns to do the same. If we don’t fight for what we believe in we will fall, and that is one thing our town is not going to do.
