PARKERSBURG, Iowa (AP) — Event organizers say that three NFL players from Aplington-Parkersburg High School helped raise over $200,000 to help rebuild the school. It was destroyed by a deadly tornado that hit northeast Iowa on May 25.

Casey Weigmann of the Denver Broncos, Brad Meester of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Jared DeVries of the Detroit Lions signed autographs on Sunday during a fundraiser at a sports bar in Cedar Falls. A fourth player, Aaron Kampman of the Green Bay Packers, couldn’t make it.

T-shirts sold for $10, and hats were $20. The event more than doubled its goal of raising $100,000.

“I don’t know if I can put into words what this means,” Aplington-Parkersburg coach Ed Thomas said. “The generosity today was unbelievable.”

At an auction later in the evening, a Miley Cyrus guitar brought in $10,000. A bidder in second place offer to buy another for $8,000. Other items up for bid included signed football jerseys and helmets.

“The town has done so much for us. Coach Thomas has done so much for me, personally, and the rest of the guys. You just want to make sure they’re taken care of,” Weigmann said.
