FAIRFIELD — The hit musical, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” will be performed at the Stephen Sondheim Center for the Performing Arts for three weekends. Artistic Director Randal K. West is teaming up with Music Director Justin Hill and Choreographer Adam Cates to create an eye-catching extravaganza of song and dance.

The show will be performed July 11-13, 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; July 17-20 and 24-27, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

“Joseph,” written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, is based on the Biblical story of Joseph and his “coat of many colors.” It follows the journey of Joseph, one of 12 sons of Jacob, as he is taken to Egypt and sold into slavery by his brothers, who are jealous of their father’s partiality to Joseph and of the special coat Jacob has given him. The show focuses on Joseph's rise to power after his dreams prove prophetic, and finally, Joseph’s reunion with his family. Though it is based on a story from the Bible, this playful show doesn’t necessarily come across as religious in nature with its universal themes, catchy tunes, and dazzling dance numbers.
