Looking for mushrooms — Courier contest begins
Etcetera

By JUDY KRIEGER, Courier Editor

The Courier’s annual mushroom contest is now under way.

I received a call Monday morning from a hunter who had found itty-bitty ones. I said he could bring them in for a photo since his was the first report I’ve had.

I ask, though, that the rest of you do not submit itsy-bitsy morels for a photo. They are just too small.

The winner of the contest will just have the “best” mushroom — well-formed, many in a clump, or whatever newsroom judges deem the best. Maybe we’ll let our new photographer select the winner since hopefully he will be shooting most of the photos. And we do prefer that you bring the specimen/s in for a photo.

After opening up my e-mail, I discovered photos from a perennial morel hunter.

Once again, “Snook,” found some morel mushrooms early in the season.

The Ottumwan sent photos showing his small find of morels that he picked “just south of Ottumwa” Friday night.

According to this mushroom expert — Steve Snook who lives on Copperhead Road — the morels “are about two weeks behind last year’s.”
