McQuivey starts exercise program
She is a certified instructor for Zunba, yoga, Pilates and Silver Sneakers

By SCOTT NILES Courier staff writer

BLOOMFIELD — Jami McQuivey has a goal to get Bloomfield residents up and moving.

She recently started a program at the Mutchler Center in Bloomfield that offers Zumba, Pilates and Vinyasa Yoga. The program is designed to use dance steps and aerobics to get people fit and active.

“It’s a fun way for people to work out,” McQuivey said. “Even if people have no rhythm or sense of dance they can do this because it is the same steps over and over to the beats.”

The Zumba exercise is a form of aerobics that uses Latin American based music including Marenga, Flamenco, Cumbia, pop and different type of beats that clients can repeat the steps to.

“We typically stick with the Latin American music, but you can do the step to any music — country, oldies, pop, rock, pretty much whatever,” McQuivey said.

“All of these are types of cardio dancing and aerobics,” she said, adding that much of the music she uses can be downloaded off iTunes or the Internet.

McQuivey is a certified instructor for Zumba, yoga, Pilates, Silver Sneakers as well as personal training.

She moved to Bloomfield from Denver, Colo., in April and noticed the lack of exercise programs available to the residents and decided she needed to do something about it.

“Fitness in Denver is a way of life,” McQuivey said. “They offer everything from kickboxing to water aerobics to general weightlifting classes.

“We have such an obesity problem in America and in the smaller towns there is no access to fitness, except the track and maybe a weight room. People need a fun and easy way to work out; something they can enjoy and stick with even if they do it on their own for 20 minutes a day.”

McQuivey now offers four classes at the center — Zumba at 5 p.m. and yoga at 6 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays.

The class is open to men, women and children age 7 and older.

“This is a passion of mine,” McQuivey said. “It all started after I had my first kid. I gained a lot of weight and then one day a girlfriend of mine asked me to go to an aerobics class with her and I went and stuck with it and lost all my extra weight and it made me feel a lot better about myself and I want other people to be able to experience that feeling, too.”

McQuivey is also available for parties and private sessions.

“If some women want to have a girls night out and want me to come for a class I am usually available,” she said “I can travel or it can be here at the Mutchler Center.”
